Fr. Thomas Sserwadda: Founder and Visionary Leader
Fr. Thomas Sserwadda, a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Masaka, Uganda, and a Ph.D. candidate in Higher Education Administration at Saint Louis University, embodies a deep commitment to faith, education, and sustainable social transformation. As founder of Hands of Hope Uganda, he leads with the conviction that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive. Through faith-rooted initiatives, educational empowerment, and community development, Fr. Thomas uplifts the most vulnerable, bringing Christ’s love to life in tangible ways. His mission bridges continents and cultures, weaving together Catholic social teaching, the transformative power of the arts, and a passion for justice to restore dignity, inspire hope, and build a brighter future for Uganda’s children and communities.
Our Roots: The Diocese of Masaka – The Heartbeat of Our Mission
Hands of Hope Uganda draws its inspiration, strength, and mission from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Masaka, a beacon of faith, service, and resilience in southern Uganda. Established as the Apostolic Vicariate of Masaka in 1939 and elevated to a diocese in 1953, Masaka made history as the first diocese in Uganda to be entirely led by indigenous African clergy. This shift marked more than just a change in leadership, it signaled the empowerment of local communities to lead with faith, wisdom, and a deep commitment to their people.
Today, under the spiritual guidance of the Most Rev. Serverus Jjumba, the Diocese of Masaka serves over 900,000 Catholics across 21,229 square kilometers. Its mission embraces evangelization, education, healthcare, and social transformation, priorities that lie at the very core of Hands of Hope Uganda. Rooted in Catholic social teaching, the diocese remains a vital force in uplifting the poor, advocating for justice, and caring for the most vulnerable.
Our Land: Uganda, the Pearl of Africa
Uganda, often called the “Pearl of Africa,” is a land of striking beauty and boundless spirit. From the shores of Lake Victoria to the headwaters of the Nile and the forests that shelter over half the world’s gorilla population, Uganda’s richness in natural wonder is mirrored in the depth of its culture and faith. Over 80% of Ugandans are Christian, with Roman Catholicism shaping the lives of millions.
Yet despite its blessings, Uganda faces profound challenges:
· 76% of the population lives in rural areas
· 73% are subsistence farmers
· 41% live on less than $1.90 per day
· Nearly half the population is under the age of 14
It is within this context that Hands of Hope Uganda seeks to serve.
Connection in the Heart of the United States
During his studies at Saint Louis University, Father Thomas Sserwadda sought ways to build relationships between his home in Uganda and the people of St. Louis. When he arrived at Sacred Heart parish in Florissant, MO in 2022, parishioners were curious to learn more about his homeland. With the help of this vibrant parish community, much-needed material and financial aid have begun to bless Fr. Sserwadda's home diocese in Uganda.
